BSMSA Awards 2009

On Saturday 21st November 2009 the British Society of Medical Secretaries & Administrators (BSMSA) gathered at the Willow Bank Hotel in Manchester to celebrate the achievements and successes of some of the countries finest medical support personnel.

The society, now in its 26th year, holds the awards annually and takes a great deal of time seeking and vetting nominations, which it receives from consultants and managers all over the UK. This year’s awards saw presentations made for Medical Secretary, Administrator and Administrative Team of the Year. Awards were also made for Highly Commended Medical Secretary, Student of the Year and the Special Presidents Award.

This year’s awards were presented to:

Medical Secretary of the Year 2009 – Lizzie Hammond

Medical Secretary of the Year 2009 (Highly Commended) – Jenny Wiggins

Medical Administrator of the Year 2009 – Pauline Angela Pratt

Medical Administrative Team of the Year 2009 – Jacqueline Meredith - System/Administration Manager, Hayley Jones - Managerial Support Officer, Danielle Hyden – Administrative Assistant, Beverley Hopkins - Administrative Assistant, Kim Leonard - Personal Assistant, Janet Campbell - Medical Secretary, Kathryn Rimmer - Administrative Assistant, Amanda Preece - Medical Secretary, Marian Lloyd - Beth Service Co-ordinator, Emma Ryan - Administrative Assistant, Tracy Davies - Administrative Assistant, Gill Wells - Administrative Assistant.

Chairman's Award 2009 – Lynda Imo (Charing Cross Hospital)

The highly commended award was a new addition this year and marks the exceptionally high standard of nominations that were received. Melanie Muldoon, the societies newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, said “The standard this year has been so high that we have had a very difficult time selecting our winners.” In the end the decision between the top two candidates for the Medical Secretary of the Year fell to awards sponsor, Zack Feather of A&E Agency, who insisted on the introduction of the new award.

The event, which was kindly sponsored by Tom Hunt of Private Practice Manager, included drinks, luncheon and an entertaining speech from Mr. Brendan Ryan FRCSE FCEM.

Plans are already underway for the 2010 awards ceremony which will be held on Friday 15th October in Oxford and will include a half-day study session and awards ceremony. Another new award category is also to be introduced, specifically aimed at private practices, which it is hoped will help us to better include this huge sector.
