BSMSA Correspondence Course for Medical Secretaries and Administrators

This is a fully mentor supported course delivered 100% through distance learning. All course work is completed at home at your own pace, with a minimum study requirement of 2-3 hours per week.

This is a 10-month course based on 2-3 hours study per week, but your mentor will go at your pace so you can complete it quicker if you wish to. It can be started at any time and you have 12 months in total to complete the course from enrolling.

This course is suitable for beginners wishing to enter the heath sector as well as individuals already working, aiming to progress their career within medical administration.

The course incorporates medical terminology, so there is no requirement to do a separate medical terminology course. 

This course is aimed at newcomers who wish to pursue a career within a medical environment, existing NHS, GP and Private Practice staff, return workers and mature students.

The Course covers an in depth look at working practices within the NHS, including medical administration, principles and communications alongside, anatomy and physiology and the systems of the body. On completion of the Course you will have a vast range of medical terminology.  There is no requirement with this course to sit a formal examination.  For every 2 Units completed an assignment is set and mentor marked, which involves one independent research question – there are 10 Assignments.  After the last Units are completed, a Final Assignment is set.

All units and assignments are completed and emailed to your Mentor who will assist you throughout the course whenever required. 

Course content:

  • Medical terminology
  • The essentials of anatomy and physiology, cells, tissues and organs; skeletal, muscular, nervous, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems; the senses, skin, lymphatic, urinary and endocrine system
  • Duties of the hospital secretary, information on the computerised systems in current use, medical records, general terminology, the NHS, career structures, general and private practice.

Course objectives:

  • Understanding the role and function of the medical secretary/ administrator 
  • Understanding anatomy, physiology and medical terminology
  • Understanding hospital organisation, private and general practice  

Final assessment: Once all units and assignments have been completed, a tutor-marked final assessment will be undertaken covering all unit contents.

Course Cost: £550.00 or 6 instalments of £95.00

Payment Options: We offer students the option to pay by instalment for this course. This option incurs an additional administration fee of £20.00. The first instalment can be made online or by cheque or bank transfer and the remaining three instalments must be paid by standing order over five consecutive months of £95.00.  Course material will be released on receipt of the first payment.
